As winters approach, we all appreciate the warmth of our blankets, the roof that keeps us away from elements and the comfortable bed that helps us get the deep sleep we need after a long day of work and daily chores… Well, this might sound like a normal life to most of us, but this is a lavish life for millions of young people across the world that need to sleep out due to lack of any such luxury.
The reason I was able to reflect on this very basic need is because I have decided to give up my bed for one night and sleep out on streets for one night.
In partnership with Covenant House International, Cisco has given me this opportunity to sleep out on streets and experience the pain first hand.
While it would be a humbling experience for me, my Sleep Out helps youth facing homelessness find safe shelter and loving care at Covenant House. That care includes essential services like education, job training, medical care, mental health and substance use counseling, and legal aid — everything they need to build independent, sustainable futures.
